1. What is IATF 16949?
IATF 16949 is a standard developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). The latest version of IATF 16949 was issued in October 2016.
IATF 16949:2016, transitioned from ISO/TS 16949:2009, is an international quality management system standard specifically for automotive component suppliers. It is built on the foundation of ISO 9001 and specifies additional requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2015 to organizations involved in automotive production and the manufacturing of automotive parts and related services.

Since IATF 16949:2016 adopts the Annex SL High Level Structure, similar to ISO 9001:2015, it is based on two fundamental foundations: the eight quality management principles and meeting specific customer requirements. It aims to develop a quality management system for continual improvement, focusing on defect prevention, and reducing variation and waste in the supply chain.
The purpose of IATF 16949:2016 is continual improvement, defect prevention, reduction of variation, and waste reduction in the supply chain. The standard requires suppliers to focus on continual improvement throughout the organization. IATF 16949:2016 also requires organizations to enhance training to improve employee competence and awareness, and to define employee responsibilities regarding quality issues. Personnel competence is addressed in detail in areas such as process design, product design and development, monitoring and measurement of processes and products, and data analysis.
The latest current version is IATF 16949:2016. To effectively implement IATF 16949, in addition to meeting the specified requirements, enterprises must regularly apply the five core tools of IATF 16949, including:
- FMEA (Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) – Analysis of potential failure modes and their effects.
- SPC (Statistical Process Control) – Statistical process control tool.
- MSA (Measurement System Analysis) – Measurement system analysis tool.
- APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning and Control Plan) – Advanced product quality planning and control plan tool.
- PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) – Production part approval process tool.
2. Applicable scope of IATF 16949
Any organization in the automotive supply chain that meets the following criteria may apply for and obtain IATF 16949 certification:
- The term “Automotive” includes automobiles, trucks (light, medium, heavy), buses, and motorcycles.
- Scope of application:
- IATF 16949:2016, together with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, defines quality management system requirements for the design and development, production, assembly, and servicing of automotive-related products.
- This technical specification is applicable to manufacturing sites of the organization and/or customer-designated service parts manufacturing sites.
- Sites within the automotive supply chain include:
- Satellite facilities supplying value-added parts, components, products, sub-assemblies, and services to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
- Satellite facilities in the automotive supply chain that manufacture production materials, parts, assemblies, or provide value-added services such as heat treatment, welding, painting, electroplating, etc., for OEMs applying this standard.
- Locations where value-added manufacturing processes occur.
- Supporting functions, whether on-site or remote (such as design centers, corporate headquarters, and distribution centers), which are subject to audit but cannot be independently certified to this standard.
