SEDEX – SMETA Consulting & Introduction
What is Sedex?
Sedex is a non-profit organization established to improve ethical business practices and social responsibility within global supply chains.
As one of the largest collaborative associations for sharing information on ethical practices and social responsibility in supply chains, Sedex provides an innovative and effective supply chain management solution that helps businesses minimize risks, protect their company’s reputation, and improve supply chain performance.
What is SMETA?
SMETA stands for Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit. It is a widely recognized and used audit and reporting methodology for evaluating ethical practices and social responsibility.
SMETA includes three key elements:
- A common guideline for conducting ethical trade audits;
- A standardized audit report format;
- A standardized corrective action plan (CAP) format.
SMETA is designed to meet various customer requirements and to reduce duplication in ethical and social responsibility audits in business operations.

SEDEX – SMETA Consulting: To support preparation for an on-site SEDEX–SMETA audit, auditors will provide a typical document checklist that factories must prepare in advance to present on the audit day. This list should be sent early enough to allow sufficient time for preparing the necessary documents before the audit.
Sedex works with auditors worldwide to ensure best practices in ethical business conduct, environmental responsibility, and social responsibility within supply chains.
Sedex allows auditors to use its collaborative platform in the following ways:
1. Independent auditors can register for a free audit account that provides basic system functions to update and manage audits conducted and uploaded by independent auditors.
2. Certification audit companies can access additional system functions, including the ability to update and manage audit data across multiple locations from a central account.
